National Guard Members(The Center Square) –

Two National Guard members have been shot near the White House and are in critical condition, according to multiple reports and a social media post from the president.

Some local media outlets have reported that at least one other person was also wounded in the shooting. The Metropolitan Police Department says one suspect is in custody, and, according to the president, has also sustained injuries.

“The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price,” President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!”

The shooting took place near the intersection of 17th and I streets in Northwest Washington, D.C., a couple blocks from the White House.

Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem took to Twitter just before 3 PM and urged Americans to join her in praying for the victims.

“Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington D.C. @DHSgov is working with local law enforcement to gather more information,” Noem wrote.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also told reporters Wednesday afternoon that the White House was “aware and is actively monitoring this tragic situation.”

The Metropolitan Police Department has posted updates to social media and officials will “have an update for the community shortly.”

The Center Square reached out to DHS and MPD directly but did not receive additional information by the time of publication.

This is a developing story.
