U.S. Rep. Alma Adams, D-N.C., seeking her seventh term on Nov. 3 representing Charlotteans in the 12th Congressional District, and Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J., asked that last Tuesday through Monday be recognized as Black Breastfeeding Week. Adams said about 80% of Black mothers breastfeed their infants, citing statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Maternal leave, accessible healthcare, food security, and racial equity in healthcare are all essential supports that Black women need to breastfeed their children – supports that are often not available,” Adams said in a release. “That is why breastfeeding is a Black maternal health issue, and it’s one we must address to prevent more of our mothers and children from needlessly losing their lives.” Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives, making an advance by the minority party difficult. Republicans' 220-215 edge won in November 2024 is today 218-212 with one independent formerly Republican caucusing with his former party, and four vacancies. Adams is heavily favored against Republican Jack Codiga. The Grand Old Party nominee has $28,703 raised in the campaign, according to the end of the second quarter filing with the Federal Elections Commission. His cash on hand on June 30 was less than three bucks. Adams’ receipts at the same time were $370,506 with cash on hand of $456,593.
