The 18 months of growth is forecast to continue. “Establishing a new state agency is no small task,” said first-term Republican state Treasurer Brad Briner, who chairs the Investment Authority board. “The NCIA team is doing a great job building the necessary infrastructure while continuing to identify opportunities to improve pension fund returns.” The North Carolina Retirement System reached a record $150 billion Aug. 18. Various equity holdings were responsible for much of the increase. The North Carolina Retirement System serves more than 1 million people, from teachers to state employees, local governments, firefighters, police officers and other public workers. It operates at a deficit similar to Social Security, with fewer people paying in than are eligible for benefits. For the year ending June 30, the retirement system earned 12.4%.
