(The Center Square) – Production of compact track loaders and telehandlers for Texas-headquartered Caterpillar will be increased through a $1 billion investment in North Carolina, the industry leader said Wednesday.

A new manufacturing facility is planned in the Lee County seat of Sanford. Commissioners for the county approved up to $46 million in property tax rebates, and the City Council in Sanford approved $39.5 million in property tax rebates.

The rebates are tied to performances inclusive of 1,950 jobs with average pay of $65,500. There were no state grants announced prior to time of publication.

“As demand for compact equipment continues to increase, we're investing to better serve this growing segment of customers,” said Caterpillar Construction Industries Group President Rod Shurman. “This investment is another way we are solving our customers’ toughest challenges by expanding access to the products, solutions and services they need to work more efficiently.”

Caterpillar explains track loaders and telehandlers are machines used in construction, landscaping, agriculture and material handling applications. They’re considered versatile.

The world’s largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, with 2025 sales and revenue of $67.6 billion according to annual financials, said the facility will be technology-enabled with emphasis on safety, quality and operational performance. Advanced manufacturing technologies, automation, digital production systems and integrated logistics capabilities are planned.

“Caterpillar’s billion-dollar investment in North Carolina is putting down even deeper roots in Sanford,” said state Commerce Department Secretary Lee Lilley in a statement. “Their investment is a powerful reflection of the manufacturing excellence, innovation, and opportunity that have become synonymous with North Carolina.

“As a major employer in Lee County, Caterpillar understands that lasting success is built through strong communities and meaningful partnerships. Their leadership in creating pathways for the next generation through apprenticeship opportunities is helping prepare our workforce for the future.”

Caterpillar has major manufacturing facilities in Clayton, Goldsboro and Winston-Salem. Others in the Deep South are in Athens, Ga., Sumter, S.C., and Corinth, Miss.
