This is the Wilmington Standard Daily Update for Monday, August 3, 2026. For quite a while now, Conservatives have been worried about the increasing popularity of the American Socialist / Communist movement – especially among Gen Z. Last year, the [Cato Institute](https://www.cato.org/blog/young-americans-socialism-too-much-thats-problem-libertarians-must-fix) reported the results of a survey that found 34% of adults 18 – 29 had a favorable view of communism. 62% felt the same way about socialism. Enter the endless posts and attacks from the right on socialist groups and the Democrat party that is [kowtowing to this emerging acceptance](https://thewilmingtonstandard.com/north-carolina-news/election-2026-warren-supporter-of-mamdani-socialist-view-stumps-for-cooper) of communism. Yet, Conservatives continue to miss the point as to WHY the next generation of American voters is leaning toward a command-system of economics. These young voters know our system is broken – and no one seems to be doing anything about it. Our access to health care is broken – doctors are pitted against patients, and the insurance companies rake in the dollars. Our legal system is broken – justice is meted out based on race, power, or political goals – and the lawyers get richer. Our educational systems – especially at the higher levels - continue to churn out students who cannot get jobs and who are hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt – yet the universities and staff are doing just fine. We are the most natural-resource rich nation in the world, yet our energy prices are too high and too volatile. Our political system is broken as we put a lot of trust in those we send into office yet nothing ever seems to get done – except the expansion of their own bank accounts. Hence the reason for the fascination with [socialism and communism](https://thewilmingtonstandard.com/podcast/reagan-faulkner-show/episode-19-communism-is-the-number-one-threat-to-america?highlight=WyJjb21tdW5pc20iXQ==) – they provide answers. They are the wrong answers. They are answers that will never work. They are answers that have been tried before and have always failed. Yet, instead of sitting around and waiting for systems to be fixed by those who have every incentive to NOT fix what is broken, young Americans are understandably embracing solutions coming from the only group that seems to be offering them – the Democrats and their communist allies.
