It is never about the weapon. This is the Wilmington Standard Daily Update for Thursday April 2 2026. Last night in his address to the country, President Trump clearly stated the number one goal of the present conflict with Iran is about stopping them from getting nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons – all weapons for that matter – are not intrinsically good or evil. It is how they are used – determined by the policy by which they are wielded – that determines the moral outcome Other countries have nuclear weapons, including those we would often consider enemies of the United States including China and Russia. But even in those cases – as bad these countries can be – there is a shared moral ethic that the use of nuclear weapons goes beyond the pale of our shared humanity. But not so Iran. They have demonstrated they have no ethical problems sponsoring terrorism abroad to further their policies. They do not think twice about arming Hamas to murder, kidnap and do other atrocities to over 1200 unarmed Israelis. They celebrated when hundreds of US Marines are killed in their barracks. In this conflict, their policy has been launch missles and drones against civilian targets in Israel and elsewhere. Even within their own borders they are out of control when they slaughter over 30,000 protestors who just want a better Iran. Yes, our gas prices – and resulting other prices – are high right now. The President last night indicated we are close to wrapping things up in the Middle East, but it will be a couple of weeks at the least. Once the world becomes assured that passage through the Straits of Hormuz is safe and economically viable, oil prices will tumble. But if all this prevents the evil regime of Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, it is all worth it. For the Wilmington Standard, I’m Reuel Sample.
