This is the Wilmington Standard Daily Update for Wednesday November 12, 2025. Politicians should really check their facts before doing anything. Recently, Board of Education member David Perry posted about his opposition to 100 Black Men – a national group that mentors and develops young people into future leaders. Mr. Perry’s objections centered on the name of the group – 100 Black Men – and wondered if we would be just as open to a group entitled 100 White Men. Had Mr. Perry done more research before opening his mouth, he would have discovered that a program by 100 Black Men that is in place right here in New Hanover County indeed has several white students in it. When learning of this [after a sit down discussion with the local chapter president](https://www.wwaytv3.com/nhc-boe-member-meets-with-head-of-organization-he-voted-against/), Mr. Perry suggested that 100 Black Men could become part of a larger group that does the same thing – but without the name. Mr. Perry is in error. There is absolutely nothing wrong with an organization whose primary goal – which is reflected in its name - is to change the course of our nation’s most at-risk group of people – young blacks. The disastrous social policies that were started in the 1960s and continue today have resulted in the complete destruction of families in the black community. Upwards of 70% of all black children are born outside of an established family. This is particularly devasting to young black boys who have no stable father figure and who have no solid guide to direct them into becoming men. 100 Black Men’s success has been amazing. Yes – there is some liberal bend to their organization. However, they are changing lives. Through partnerships with Southwest Airlines and others, mentor training, one-on-one relationships and various education programs, 100 Black Men is a success – and should be welcomed into our schools. As to Mr. Perry’s objection to the name? If another organization wants to come along that can demonstrate the same success rate, the same passion for our youth, the same dedication to excellence - well – let them come and we can have that discussion later. If their programs are targeted to one particular population of our schools – but they can demonstrate they are open to accepting others – all the better. But until we stop the destruction of our families – especially black families – through social and economic programs that incentivize this destruction – let 100 Black Men do their job.
