Iran has decided it wants to try our patience – and decide our elections.

This is the Wilmington Standard Daily Update for Wednesday, July 8, 2026.

After repeatedly breaking the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, Iran is once again on the wrong side of the barrel of the United States military. Calling the continued cease fire a “waste of time” [President Trump](https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/trump-iran-war-peace-ended-israel-hormuz-july-8) has indicated that air strikes will probably continue tonight as the result of several ships being attacked in the Strait of Hormuz.

No real surprise. [Iran](https://thewilmingtonstandard.com/sam-ibraham/is-the-iran-conflict-a-just-war) has demonstrated repeatedly it is a nation that cannot be trusted. The leadership of that country has no problem putting the welfare and lives of its citizens at risk as they pursue total economic, political, and religious control of that region. So, instead of ending this conflict as civilized nations do through negotiation, [Iran now must beg](https://thewilmingtonstandard.com/podcast/the-daily-update/did-congress-just-hand-iran-the-school-yard-daily-update-june-4-2026?highlight=WyJpcmFuIl0=) for peace in the face of utter destruction. There is no other path forward to lasting change in the Middle East.

The only thing that can get in the way of that victory, however, is the American people. The Iranian leadership is betting the farm that we cave. They are hoping that high prices as the result of oil transport problems and political discontent fomented by Democrats and the isolationist Right end up in a devasting loss for Republicans in our midterms. They know if President Trump loses either or both Houses of Congress that he will be forced to bring this conflict to an end – and on Iran’s terms. All Iran has to do is keep making overtures at peace and stringing everyone along. It is a game of very high stakes election interference – and Iran is very good at it.

The reality is that [gas prices](https://gasprices.aaa.com/?state=NC) are at an average of $3.70 nationally and $3.48 here in North Carolina – down from over $5.00 under the Biden Administration. While some prices remain inflated – especially beef – grocery staples have actually hit their [lowest price in 2 years](https://finance.yahoo.com/economy/articles/top-grocery-staples-hit-lowest-161252502.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cucGVycGxleGl0eS5haS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAKGmqQ8YnfKmEOOvj3hOM3lRBI3yKDnkSbhRxyV0XgOw_17zA_kfBibYA7FnLqp9aVcFC3v7wXl_xlIzCQ5qkoFWwf6XEch_XCUkwRZcvjK_Ym-xdqai-bywu-Pn8FEDDiy-JJeej266DWzXaxnlG7R5NCjtyGfI6ybgyBgmWuVa). Unemployment [remains at about 4.2%](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm) - which is a little high – but employment in professional and business services has increased. [North Carolina just passed a budget](https://thewilmingtonstandard.com/north-carolina-news/state-budget-signed-into-law) that increases pay for teachers and law enforcement – without raising taxes.

While we could always do better – we have certainly improved over the crushing economic policies of the previous administration. In short, America is doing just fine.

Do not let the Mullahs of Iran – and their Democrat allies – tell you otherwise.

For the Wilmington Standard, I’m Reuel Sample. Thanks for listening.
