Episode summary:
Iran is openly testing American resolve and trying to tilt our elections at the same time. In under three minutes, we walk through how Tehran’s attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, its phony “peace” gestures, and its bet on U.S. domestic politics all fit together. We lay out what Iran really wants, why it is counting on Democrats and the isolationist right to pressure Republicans, and how the hard numbers on gas prices and jobs undercut the crisis narrative. And we end with a simple reminder: America is doing better than the fear‑mongers admit—and we do not have to let the mullahs decide our future.
What you’ll learn / Key moments
- 00:01 – Iran moves to “try our patience” and even “decide our elections,” setting up the stakes of the latest escalation.
- 00:11 – After repeated violations of a Memorandum of Understanding, Iran attacks shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and President Trump calls the cease-fire a waste of time.
- 01:00 – The strategy behind Tehran’s moves: drive up prices and political discontent—fueled by Democrats and the isolationist right—to hurt Republicans in the midterms.
- 01:44 – The reality check on the home front: gas prices, grocery staples, and unemployment numbers that undercut the crisis narrative.
- 02:12 – North Carolina’s budget boost for teachers and law enforcement, and the conclusion that America is “doing just fine” despite what Iran’s leaders and their allies claim.

Iran has decided it wants to try our patience – and decide our elections.
This is the Wilmington Standard Daily Update for Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
After repeatedly breaking the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, Iran is once again on the wrong side of the barrel of the United States military. Calling the continued cease fire a “waste of time” President Trump has indicated that air strikes will probably continue tonight as the result of several ships being attacked in the Strait of Hormuz.
No real surprise. Iran has demonstrated repeatedly it is a nation that cannot be trusted. The leadership of that country has no problem putting the welfare and lives of its citizens at risk as they pursue total economic, political, and religious control of that region. So, instead of ending this conflict as civilized nations do through negotiation, Iran now must beg for peace in the face of utter destruction. There is no other path forward to lasting change in the Middle East.
The only thing that can get in the way of that victory, however, is the American people. The Iranian leadership is betting the farm that we cave. They are hoping that high prices as the result of oil transport problems and political discontent fomented by Democrats and the isolationist Right end up in a devasting loss for Republicans in our midterms. They know if President Trump loses either or both Houses of Congress that he will be forced to bring this conflict to an end – and on Iran’s terms. All Iran has to do is keep making overtures at peace and stringing everyone along. It is a game of very high stakes election interference – and Iran is very good at it.
The reality is that gas prices are at an average of $3.70 nationally and $3.48 here in North Carolina – down from over $5.00 under the Biden Administration. While some prices remain inflated – especially beef – grocery staples have actually hit their lowest price in 2 years. Unemployment remains at about 4.2% - which is a little high – but employment in professional and business services has increased. North Carolina just passed a budget that increases pay for teachers and law enforcement – without raising taxes.
While we could always do better – we have certainly improved over the crushing economic policies of the previous administration. In short, America is doing just fine.
Do not let the Mullahs of Iran – and their Democrat allies – tell you otherwise.
