Two lessons learned.

This is the Wilmington Standard Daily Update for Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

The Carolina Journal is reporting that $300,000 going to a private, gated community in Harnett County is being clawed back by the state legislature.

Outlays from the state budget should be determined by the needs of the recipients and not their economic status.   Yet we still do not know what these funds were going to be used for in the Carolina Lakes community.  Unearthed posts from a Facebook group point to everything from putting in an automated gate for fire access to repairing the shelter at their private marina.  But we just do not know – and we should.  No one at Carolina Lakes is talking – including Joe Pike who represents that area

There are two lessons to be learned here.  First, independent and free press organizations like the Carolina Journal, the Center Square – and quite frankly the Wilmington Standard – continue to prove that we are absolutely essential to the effective governing of our state and our national Republic.  Contrary to the opinions of the legacy media, these organizations do not carry the water for the Republican Party or Donald Trump.   It is our job to bring to light through reporting and commentary the activities of government and those trying to influence our culture.  Whether it is reporting about Democrat socialist supporters backing Roy Cooper or Republicans in the North Carolina House who do not know where social boundaries are – today’s independent media strives to do one thing – bring you the truth.

But the second lesson to be learned is that when Republicans act like out of control, bring-home-the-bacon, special-interest politicians – they should get criticized – every single time.  It turns out Representative Pike lives in Carolina Lakes.  His wife – who is his legislative assistant - owns lakefront property in that neighborhood.  The whole thing stinks to high heaven of favors and rewards – and everyone involved should be called out for it.

Republicans need to stop doing things like this.   The GOP is not the tax-and-spend party, it IS the party of fiscal responsibility.  Conservatives do not take money away from wage earners for redistribution – which is exactly what these budgetary earmarks do.   Conservatives keep taxes low and actually decrease government involvement in our lives – so places like Carolina Lakes can afford to put their own marina shelters back in to place without someone in Wilmington having to pay for it.  In 2026 when Republicans are having to justify every vote in the upcoming elections, antics like this do not help our chances.

Lets hope that people like Representative Pike has learned his lesson.
